This website serves as a repository of movie reviews that are based on, or like I said, share some aspect of Martial Arts in them. To give you some examples right off the bat, movies that are based on Martial Arts would be ones like “Shaolin vs Lama”, or a movie like “Lone Wolf and Cub”. These movies focus mainly on the way of life one would have carried out in a “Martial Society”, where discipline, honor, honesty, kinship, loyalty, courage, and many other moral traits that were highly valued in such societies, exist. Traits and values which great part of our current era societies have forgotten about today. I will only be considering movies as a Martial Arts movies if they share the highly esteemed traits I mentioned above. In other words, if you don’t see a single kick or punch in a movie, be aware of these traits and values I mentioned above.
I found the definition on WikiPedia 100% satisfying of what I consider Martial Arts to be:
Martial Arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practiced for a number of reasons such as self-defense; military and law enforcement applications; competition; physical, mental, and spiritual development; entertainment; and the preservation of a nation’s intangible cultural heritage.
Notice the emphasis on codified systems. Codified systems could be anything in regard to that practice which makes it what it is. That could be traditions, believes, internal practices, and so on. Also notice the purposes listed here, these are very important. The point is that a Martial Art is not only defined by its physical combat, but also by a set of values it demands from its practitioners and the purposes it serves.
I have a couple of goals for Martial Arts Movie Reviews. One is to create awareness for a set values which are due high esteem. Such a set of values is essential for a civilization to have structure, function, and purpose. Goal number two I have for Martial Arts Movie Reviews, is to write about plots, scenes, action, choreography in these kind of movies. We’ll be writing about plots and scenes which heighten our senses, and some which don’t. Whether it’d physical action that makes you want to stand up and learn, moments to live for, or plots that leave us bewildered I’ve always found them fascinating. Goal number three is that by reading these reviews, you could possibly see which movies you’d like to watch this weekend.
My final goal for Martial Arts Movie Reviews is to get you pondering about the vast world of Martial Arts. There is vast content to be explored in the fascinating world of Martial Arts. If you’re a person reading this, anywhere from a grandmother, to a high-school student, to a parent of three; you should know that this is a world like no other. The people in the Martial Arts world are keen to purpose. Everyone has a purpose in this world, and an important one at that. Regardless of any limiting factor you might think of, or any possible boundary you can set on yourself, once you immerse yourself in the world of Martial Arts, you will find purpose.
With that, I have split movie reviews in categories by the decade in which the films were released. It’s fun to see how film making has evolved over the years, and it’s fun to notice that the earlier you go back to, the more closely focused to traditions and customs the film might be.
